STRETCHING a point ... Arnold Belfield inspects the jumper after its ‘transformation.’

The height of fashion? That's stretching things a bit!

21/11/2005

IT CAN be argued that fashion knows no bounds but some of the clothes on sale in Rochdale in 1979 were stretching the point - literally.

When a housewife washed the Italian-made jumper she had bought from a town centre shop she followed the instructions to the letter.

But when the garment emerged from the water it had undergone a remarkable transformation.

The sleeves were at least three feet long and what was supposed to be a narrow neck was a gaping one foot wide.

Inspecting the jumper Arnold Belfield, Rochdale branch secretary of the Textile and Allied Workers Union, said: "I forecast dishcloths would cost £1 each if people continued buying imported textiles. I underestimated.

"It appears we have already entered the age of the £3 dishcloth, for that is all this jumper is fit for. You cannot even pull it back.

"Let people realise what they are letting themselves in for."

Asked what she would do with the jumper now the housewife joked: "I think we shall send it to the Prison Service for a prisoner doing a long stretch.

"It seems appropriate it should be connected with the long arm of the law."
