Neil laid foundation for building dispute

17/11/2007

WARDLE residents were left bemused when Labour leader Neil Kinnock laid a foundation stone for their new swimming pool in April 1987.

He cemented the stone into a wall on the site – which was promptly demolished as soon as he left!

Rochdale Council leader Councillor Richard Farnell insisted that this was normal practice for events of this kind.

He said: “Compared with the tremendous publicity the school and the new swimming pool received on television, radio and in the newspapers, the small cost is well justified.”

But Mrs Rita Sarginson, Wardle’s Liberal candidate for the upcoming council elections, said: “The builder has told residents that the wall cost £1,000 – and that is £1,000 added to the rates bill.

“They did not even build the wall where the swimming pool is supposed to go."

Councillor Farnell responded: “Foundation stones are usually laid in this way. Building work proper commences once the wall has been taken down.

“It is standard practice because you can’t go on site when work has commenced for safety considerations.”
