Wonderful technology at the press of a button

13/10/2007

COUNCIL leader Alan Taylor has been in politics for quite a few years – and seen a lot of changes – but has probably seen no change as far-reaching as the impact of computerisation and global technology.

In October 1984, for instance, when he was chairman of the  Rochdale housing committee – forerunner to the present day management board of Rochdale Boroughwide Housing – Councillor Taylor oversaw the installation of a new system designed to calculate council house rents.

Housing staff were taught how to operate a new computer programme which allowed them to see rents – and how they worked out – at the touch of a key.

As our Observer photograph from the time shows, a then bearded Councillor Taylor started the new computer programme with the help of Joe Willis, the council’s systems manager,  David Byrom, the assistant borough housing manger and his boss, housing manager, Don Simpson.

The output gained from the new computer programme gave housing staff instant access to the borough’s 22,000 council tenants records.
