Pals got on bikes for charity

8/ 9/2007

CHARITY fund-raising has always been an intrinsic part of human nature and one of the best ways to raise money for a worthy cause is to do something that will bring a personal sense of achievement and satisfaction as well.

That’s why charity bikes rides are as popular now as they always have been.

Twenty years ago, for example, school pals Andrew Brennan and Jonathan Kershaw were planning a sponsored ride in the Outer Hebrides, with the aim of raising £700 for Rochdale branch of the NSPCC.

The 350-mile trip was expected to take them about a fortnight.

Before they left Castleton in July 1987, Andrew and Jonathan posed for an Observer photographer.

Andrew, then 16, of St Gabriel’s Close, was a junior member of the Rochdale branch of the NSPCC while Jonathan, 18 when this photograph was taken, lived in Leander Drive and attended Bishop Henshaw RC School, now renamed St Cuthbert’s.

Jonathan is still a familar figure in Castleton. He works part-time at a local bookies', he is a member of the Blue Pits quiz team and is studying for a geography degree at university.
